What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, formed from the decay of uranium in soil and rock.

Canadian Guideline:

The current Canadian guideline for radon in indoor air for dwellings is 200 Becquerels per cubic meter (200 Bq/m3).

  • Home Testing:

Testing your home for radon is essential to determine the levels and whether mitigation is needed.

How can radon get into my home?

Radon gas moves through the ground and escapes outside or into buildings.

Radon can enter a home through any place it finds an opening where the house is in contact with the ground: cracks in foundation walls and floor slabs, construction joints, gaps around service pipes, support posts, window casements, floor drains, sumps, or cavities inside walls.

Radon Mitigation:

Radon mitigation is the process of reducing radon gas levels in a home. This typically involves sealing entry points and/or installing a system that actively removes radon gas from under the house and vents it outside.

Here’s what a professional mitigation process typically involves:

1. Sub-Slab Depressurization System Installation

  • We drill a hole through the basement or slab floor to access the ground beneath your home.

  • A PVC pipe is inserted into this space to collect radon gas before it enters your living area.

  • The pipe is connected to a quiet, continuously running fan that vents the gas safely outside.

  • The system is sealed and designed to run efficiently year-round, even in cold Canadian climates.

2. Sealing Entry Points

While sealing alone won’t eliminate radon, we:

  • Seal cracks in the foundation, floors, and around utility penetrations.

  • Cover and seal sump pits and floor drains where possible.

  • These steps help prevent radon entry and improve the overall performance of the mitigation system.

3. Post-Mitigation Testing

After installation, we:

  • Re-test your home using a certified long-term test to confirm radon levels are reduced below 200 Bq/m³.

  • Provide a written report and ensure the system is functioning properly and safely.
